Understanding Nisab and Zakat in Islam
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is the obligatory charity that purifies wealth when it reaches the nisab threshold and has been held for one lunar year (hawl).
The nisab threshold is equivalent to:
- 85 grams of gold
- 595 grams of silver
- 5 camels
- 30 cows
- 40 sheep/goats
- 653 kg of agricultural produce (irrigated)
- 653 kg of agricultural produce (non-irrigated)
Livestock (An'am)
Zakat on livestock applies to camels, cows, sheep and goats that have been in possession for a full lunar year and are used for breeding or milk production.
Gold & Silver (Thahab wal Fidda)
Gold and silver that reaches the nisab threshold and has been in possession for a full lunar year is subject to Zakat at 2.5%.
Agricultural Produce (Zuru)
Zakat on crops is due at the time of harvest if the produce reaches the nisab of 653 kg.
Business Inventory (Urud)
Zakat on business inventory is calculated at 2.5% of the market value of goods intended for sale that have been held for a full lunar year.

Zakat Calculation Formulas for Different Wealth Categories
1. Gold and Silver Zakat Calculation
Formula: Zakat = Total Pure Metal Weight × 0.025 (2.5%)
Calculation Steps:
- Determine Pure Metal Weight = Total Weight × Purity Percentage
- Gold Purity Check: Nisab Threshold = 85 grams
- Silver Purity Check: Nisab Threshold = 595 grams
- If total pure metal weight exceeds nisab, apply 2.5% rate
Example:
- 100g of 22K Gold
- Pure Gold Weight = 100g × (22/24) = 91.67g
- Zakat Due = 91.67g × 0.025 = 2.29g of gold
2. Business Inventory Zakat Calculation
Formula: Zakat = Total Inventory Market Value × 0.025 (2.5%)
Calculation Steps:
- Calculate total market value of saleable goods
- Compare with nisab threshold (typically gold or silver value)
- If value exceeds nisab, apply 2.5% rate
Example:
- Inventory Value: $10,000
- Zakat Due: $10,000 × 0.025 = $250
3. Agricultural Produce Zakat Calculation
Formulas:
- Natural Irrigation: Zakat = Crop Quantity × 0.10 (10%)
- Artificial Irrigation: Zakat = Crop Quantity × 0.05 (5%)
- Mixed Irrigation: Zakat = Crop Quantity × 0.075 (7.5%)
Calculation Steps:
- Determine total crop harvest
- Check nisab threshold (653 kg)
- Apply appropriate rate based on irrigation method
Example:
- Wheat Harvest: 1000 kg (Natural Irrigation)
- Zakat Due: 1000 kg × 0.10 = 100 kg of wheat
4. Livestock Zakat Calculation
Unique Calculation Method: Instead of percentage, livestock zakat is calculated by animal count and type:
Camels:
- 5-9 camels: 1 sheep/goat
- 10-14 camels: 2 sheep/goats
- 25-35 camels: 1 one-year-old female camel
Cows:
- 30-39 cows: 1 one-year-old calf
- 40-59 cows: 1 two-year-old cow
- 60-69 cows: 2 one-year-old calves
Sheep/Goats:
- 40-120 animals: 1 sheep/goat
- 121-200 animals: 2 sheep/goats
- 201-300 animals: 3 sheep/goats
- 301+ animals: 1 sheep/goat per 100 animals
Key Calculation Principles
- Nisab Threshold: Minimum wealth amount triggering Zakat
- Lunar Year Possession: Wealth must be held for one lunar year
- Pure Wealth Calculation: Consider only productive and saved wealth
